1348 Zone Booster 3 & 4 Pump Station Condition Assessment and Feasibility Study

Ontario Municipal Utilities Company

Design

Completed 2020

AKM Consulting Engineers conducted a Level 2 condition assessment and feasibility study for the 1348 Zone 3 and 4 pump station, built in 1959 and upgraded in 2004. The pump station had two horizontal centrifugal pumps and electrical service from a 150 kVA transformer. The building structure was in fair condition but did not meet existing codes. Past efficiency tests showed the motor for pump 3 was undersized. AKM identified several deficiencies and suggested mitigation in case the City decided to retain its existing setup:

  • Upgrade electrical service from 180 amps to 400 amps.
  • Address trip hazards by adding overhead cable trays, reconfiguring pipes, and installing safety measures.
  • Install a 3-ton overhead bridge crane.
  • Upgrade structural components and repair the building slab.
  • Optionally, replace the pumps with vertical turbines and retrofit the roof for easier pump removal.
  • Install motor-operated valves with SCADA control.

Given the pump station’s age and the cost of upgrades, AKM recommended constructing a new pump station and demolishing the existing one.
