PFOA and PFOS Treatment for Wells 833 and 903

Bellflower Somerset Mutual Water Company

Design

Estimated Completion 2025*

AKM Consulting Engineers is currently preparing plans, specifications and estimates for installation of liquid phase ion exchange treatment facilities with single pass, dual (lead and lag) 12-foot diameter vessels to treat perfluorooctonoc acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) at the Company’s Wells 833 and 903. The two wells currently have PFOA concentrations of 8.4 and 7.9 nanograms per liter (ng/l, parts per trillion); and PFOS concentrations of 40 and 53 ng/l, which exceed the notification levels of 5.1 and 6.5 ng/l. and response level of 40 ng/l for PFOS. The treatment system will include dual (parallel) cartridge filters to remove suspended solids ahead of the IX vessels. The scope of work includes permitting through the State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water; siting the treatment facilities at the existing locations to provide adequate access for costruction and future maintenance, and re-configuring of the discharge piping and the discharge to waste piping.
